About George

George A. Gagnan, St. John's Prep, c. 1955

George grew up locally in Peabody with little means. He was a multi-sport athlete at St. John's, named a team captain in football his senior year, Catholic Conference, as well as Agganis All-Star, and eventually went on to receive a Division I scholarship from the University of Miami.

When his playing career was over, he went on to coach locally at Salem High School and Malden Catholic. He remained a coach and steadfast mentor until the very end to many of his players, and loved nothing more than catching up with them over the years.

George began bringing his grandson Logan Mahoney '14 to Prep games at the age of four, and Logan followed in his footsteps in playing football at SJP, being named team captain, achieving the same all-star accolades, and now coaching on the Prep's varsity football staff.

George had a true gift of gab, and was a tremendous friend to many throughout the SJP community. He was one of a kind. Family, to George, was everything, and St. John's Prep held a special place in his heart.

Why We Play

The George A. Gagnan '56 Fund was established at St. John's Prep in 2024 to ensure that George's love and admiration for the school lives on in his name. Every dollar raised by this tournament goes directly to the Fund.

The Fund directly impacts students who exemplify discipline, perseverance, and a strong commitment to St. John's Prep and its community.

Questions

Where does the money go?

100% of proceeds support the George A. Gagnan '56 Fund at St. John's Prep, in memory of George A. Gagnan, Class of 1956. The Mahoney family covers operational costs; your registration and donations go directly to the Fund.

Is this tax-deductible?

Contributions made through this campaign are not tax-deductible. The Memorial Classic is operated by an unincorporated association formed for this tournament. Sponsorship payments may qualify as a business marketing expense — consult your tax advisor.

Is there a raffle?

Not in year 1 — we're keeping the inaugural tournament lean. We may add a 50/50 or silent auction in future years.

Are spectators welcome?

Yes. Friends and family are welcome to join for the awards reception. Email us in advance so we can plan.

What's the food?

BBQ and grilled lunch at the turn, then hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in the clubhouse for the awards reception.

What's the dress code?

Black Swan requires a collared shirt. No denim, no sweatpants, no metal spikes.

What if it rains?

The tournament will proceed in light rain. Black Swan only reschedules if the course is officially closed for lightning or flooding. If that happens, we’ll communicate the new date and registrations will roll over.

Can I pick my foursome?

Yes. List your four players at registration. If you're a single registering, we'll assign you to a foursome.
